This song was written after returning from Tornillo, Texas in December of 2018, where people came from across the country, during the holiday season, to protest and witness the placement of immigrant children in detention camps. Needing to reflect on the enormity of this tragic circumstance, I sat by a pond and also witnessed, how nature supports itself, works together and is at peace. The song emerged from my relief and contentment at seeing something so beautiful, so profound in its gentle simplicity.
We are, as Americans, so privileged to be able to afford the luxury of sitting by a pond, without worry regarding how we will receive food, shelter, maintain our connection to our family, or even, fear for our lives.
The last part of the song is a prayer for people who do not have this privilege, and the hope that those, who "have," can work towards creating this possibility of life, for those who "have not." The song is written very simply so that anyone can learn it, no matter the age, no matter where they come from. We are all one humanity.
